I saw this problem at one of the blogs I frequently visit.
Here's the original problem essentially as it was posed to us: "A plane is standing on a runway that can move (some sort of band conveyer). The plane moves in one direction, while the conveyer moves in the opposite direction. This conveyer has a control system that tracks the plane speed and tunes the speed of the conveyer to be exactly the same (but in the opposite direction). Can the plane take off?"

sa tanung mo...tingin ko makakatake-off kasi naka-attain pa rin ng sufficient velocity yung plane to achieve lift off. essentially nagkaroon sya ng stationary runway....tama ba??? (ala michael hulse)

hmmm.. well consider mo rin to: paano nya narating yung sufficient velocity na sinasabi mo kung stationary yung plane (since nagmomove sa opposite direction yun runway, at the same speed)? saka kailangan ng plane para lumipad is lift, so dapat may air na nagpapass sa ilalim ng wing. So kung stationary yung plane paano magkakaroon ng enough lift para lumipad yung plane? :D.

iniisip ko kung magkaka-lift ba o hindi kung stationary? hmmmm...
sa tingin ko hindi... dahil may punto si con. kung umaandar yung runway at the same speed ng plane stationary ito relative sa hangin. so kung ganun nga walang gumagalaw na hangin sa ibabaw at sa ilalim ng wings ng eroplano... so walang lift
unless sobrang bilis ng andar ng runway at nagkakaroon ng tinatawag na venturi effect kung saan nahihigop yung stationary air dahil sa movement ng runway...
or baka naman enought na yung pag-higop ng hangin ng jet engine para magkaroon ng lift sa pakpak ng eroplano?
